The boat then slowly moves towards the Horseshoe Falls or Canadian Falls. Approximately 90% of the Niagara River flows over it. Much of this fall is located in Ontario, Canada. It has got its name from its horseshoe like shape. It is not very high. The depth of the river at the base of fall is actually more than the fall itself. The boat takes you as close to the base of fall as possible.
The closer you get to it, the more you fall in love with it. What a beauty!!! The water was plunging at the base as if it was eager to hug the earth below. The mist around was protecting their act of intimacy from the world’s sight. That is the moment when you forget the whole world; where you are, who you are, your existence. What remains is the thundering sound of water and the mystical mist. You become speechless and something in you starts melting in the falling water. You feel closer to God. If death has to come; it should come at this moment, at this place….
Now the boat was on its journey back to the port. The lady by my side said that she had bought a new DSLR camera just to capture Niagara from as close as possible. But she forgot to capture!!! Her next words –“I don’t need a picture of it. It is so embossed on my mind that I will not forget it even in my next birth.” That is what Niagara is. It is not something just to see, but also to feel.
Another thrilling adventure at the Niagara Falls is Cave of the Winds. It is for the daredevils. An elevator takes you down into the Niagara Gorge. Here again they provide you water-proof footwear and raincoats. The tour guide takes you several steps on the wooden walkway to the famous Hurricane Deck. Now you are just 20 feet away from the surging waters of the Bridal Veil Falls!! The thundering wall of water is in front of you splashing you generously. You can experience the full force of the falls from a safe distance. Sometimes the winds reach up to 68 mph producing a storm-like condition.
Slowly the night starts taking over. But that does not impede the celebration of this natural beauty. It is the time for illumination and fireworks now. The American Falls are illuminated from the Canadian shore. Morning’s snow-white mist now glitters in rainbow colors. The sight transports you to a different world. Illumination is year round. But fireworks are displayed only on Friday and Sunday night during the summer. You need to secure your place at a good spot well in advance to enjoy this stunning show.
The end of fireworks marks the end of the most memorable day in life. We bid a goodbye to the Falls with heavy hearts. But the history and folklores of Niagara were looming in our heads. Its beauty has made a lasting impression on our minds. It has something that touches you to the core and leaves you spellbind. It has to be experienced. No words or photograph can capture it….
